Log in for the first time
Find your server's address, collect the root password once, and connect over SSH.
This guide gets you from a newly built server to a root prompt in a few minutes. Everything you need is in the Connect card on the server page: the address, the SSH line to paste, and the root password, waiting for you to collect.
Collect the password#
- Open the server from Servers.
- In Connect, next to Password, press Show it once.
- Have a password manager ready, then press Show it.
- Copy the username and password, then press I've copied it.
Connect#
Open a terminal on your own computer, then paste the SSH line from the Connect card. It looks like this, with your server's address:
Windows
- Press the Windows key, type Terminal (or PowerShell on older Windows), and open it.
- Paste the SSH line and press Enter:
ssh [email protected]Windows 10 and 11 have SSH built in, so there is nothing to install.
macOS
- Open Terminal, from Applications, Utilities, or by searching for it with Spotlight.
- Paste the SSH line and press Enter:
ssh [email protected]Linux
- Open your terminal.
- Paste the SSH line and press Enter:
ssh [email protected]The first time, SSH asks whether you trust the server's key. Type yes and press Enter.
Paste the password when it asks. Nothing shows as you type, which is normal. If you added an SSH key when you ordered, you are let in without the password.
