Reinstall the operating system
Put a fresh operating system on your VPS, the same one or another; the disk is erased, but the address, name and firewall stay.
A rebuild erases the server's disk and installs a fresh operating system, the same one or another.
Rebuild the server#
Open the server from Servers and choose the Rebuild tab:
- 1As it is now Reinstalls the system the server has today.
- 2Ubuntu Each family opens to its versions. Pick one.
- 3Rescue mode For a server that won't boot. Nothing is erased.
- 4Ask for it Asks us to attach your own ISO, and tells you when it's ready.
- 5What happens Reads back your choice, and what's kept and what's erased.
- 6Rebuild this server Starts the rebuild. It stays greyed out until you've typed the server's name.
| What | After a rebuild |
|---|---|
| The disk | Erased |
| The operating system | The one you chose |
| SSH keys | Every key on your account. Keys added by hand are gone. |
| Root password | New, waiting in the Connect card to collect once |
| Address and hostname | Kept |
| Firewall | Kept, rules in the same order, on or off as before |
While it runs#
It usually takes a few minutes, and the page refreshes itself when it's done. You can close it and come back.
Afterwards#
- In the Connect card, press Show it once and save the password. See Log in for the first time.
- Your computer will warn that the host key has changed, because the fresh system made new ones. Remove the old entry, then connect:
ssh-keygen -R 203.0.113.10Rebuild more than twice in a few minutes and the portal asks you to wait.
