Use the browser console
Reach your server's screen from the portal, without SSH or the network, and the keys the console adds for you.
The console is your server's own screen, in your browser. It doesn't use the server's network, so it still works after a firewall mistake, a broken network setting or a lost key.
Open the server from Servers and choose the Console tab, then log in as root with the server's password.
- 1Serial A text terminal, the one the console opens on. It keeps what has scrolled past, and you can copy from it.
- 2VNC The server's display, as a monitor would show it. Use it when Serial is blank, or while the server starts up.
- 3Paste Sends text to the console. If your browser won't hand over the clipboard, a box opens to paste into.
- 4Copy Copies the text you've selected on the Serial screen.
- 5Full screen Gives the console the whole screen.
- 6connected Says whether the console is connected to the server.
- 7Keyboard Brings up a phone's keyboard.
- 8Ctrl Holds Ctrl for the next key you press, so Ctrl then d sends Ctrl+D.
- 9Ctrl+C Stops the program running in the terminal.
- 10Copy SSH line Copies the command to connect over SSH, for when you're done here.
- 11Reset password Sets a new root password, if you don't have it.
Ctrl+Alt+Del appears in place of Copy on the VNC screen, and only works there.
If it says the server is stopped#
The console needs the server running. Press Start at the top of the page.
If the server won't boot#
The console shows what the server prints as it starts, which is usually the first clue. If you can't fix it from there, the Rebuild tab has two ways out, under Your own ISO, or rescue mode:
- Rescue mode starts a live system with your disk attached, so you can repair it without erasing anything. Press Ask for it.
- Rebuild erases the disk and installs a fresh system. See Reinstall the operating system.
